Front: TO: OFFICERS OF THE JAPANESE TROOPS IN LEYTE.

Reverse: I pay respect to your fighting spirit.

It is needless to say that the situation of your Force is desperate.
This is the result of successive sinkings off Leyte of numerous convoys which were
carrying reinforcements and supplies. Consequently, the supply of ammunition
and rations to your Force has stopped completely while your casualties increase
steadily. No doubt you are aware that these factors and the continued absence
of Japanese planes have resulted in the deterioration of the morale of your troops.

At present the situation is such that you must choose between dying
uselessly or living courageously in peace.

Can you exonerate yourself in the eyes of the families of your men if
you force them to die uselessly?

Carefully deliberate upon the above mentioned things and least permit
your men to live in the peaceful world of tomorrow.

COMMANDER IN CHIEF
U.S. Forces
