Since joining YRS , driving on racing track has become one of my purposes I drive a car. On this point, it was a fact that I was not satisfied with my previous car RVR 's performance. I decided to go to Car Plaza where I bought the RVR with my family with the notice of a event from them when I thought that we might have been able to buy a new car because the RVR had to take a regular check-up in September, 2002. Only PAPA wanted to buy a new car then.
When we tried to ride Cedia Wagon as a salesperson's recommendation, the performance of the engine with a turbo charger fascinated PAPA, and the comfortable riding and the room seemed to satisfy MAMA (and T-Dino also?). Our plan of buying this car was taking shape quickly. MAMA began to calculate how to pay the loan. We knew we were just playing into Car Plaza's hands. Only the problem to buy it was that it had only an automatic transmission (AT) because PAPA had decided the next car would have to be with a manual transmission (MT). I could not decide so easily, however, I judged the engine and the footwork had a good enough performance to enjoy, and at last, I signed on the contract to buy. The same steering wheel as Lancer Evolution VII also moved me to sign.
It can be said with "simplicity and fortitude". Though its appearance of the back like crushed RVR from the roof that is my previous car, not looking so cool, may not, the exterior totally looks simple. It is in black so might look a little cool?
The door handles are much more useful than RVR's that were very slippy.
The brilliant wheels and the tires with 50 % flat rate invite me to drive faster. The muffler is hidden under the rear bumper of the right side.
What attracts my attention first is the MOMO steering wheel that is the same form as Lancer Evolution VII GSR's, which has a smaller diameter and a thicker grip so makes better handling and cooler-looking than another MOMO for Evo. V that had been with my RVR. With Sports Edition II, its steering wheel has a shift switches on it that is the same as Evo. VII GT-A, but I prefer the one for GSR. The drawback is that it is a little hard to see the tachometer on the left edge of the three eyes of meters, which the smaller diameter may cause. I hope the tachometer would be on the center like Evo. VII.
The panels like made of titan, called "Hairline-like Panel", used for the instrument panel and so on, gives cool atmosphere in the room. It is easy to operate the three round dials to adjust the air conditioner like RVR's. There are combined colors with blue on the bench and the back, and black on the other parts of the seats. It looks cool, but its cushion is too soft for me. It can be dirty soon also.
The sunglasses holder on the ceiling is useful, but the other pockets are not big enough. I was worried about where to put the certificate of the car check-up. The center console with a few shelfs, used also for an arm rest, is useful, but sometimes blocks my handling the side brake.
It should surprise you that the capacity of the trunk room is much more enough than your expectation when you see the floor is a little too high. Even when we put baggages for three people in it, they are not put higher than the seat back and there is still enough space to the ceiling. We can put even a bicycle in the trunk if we lay the rear seat back down to the front. There is a tray for small tools and so on under the floor, and a spare tire is under the tray with a little space to put something else.
The red strut tower bar just for Sports Edition is under the engine hood. This 1.8 liter GDI engine "4G93", with a turbo charger and an intercooler, was made for easily driving on daily life rather than getting the horsepower. Its maximum power is 165 ps, which is not so remarkable, but the power weight ratio is 7.88 ps/kg that is powerful enough. The fuel mileage of 10/15 mode on the catalogue is 13.0 km/l that is good enough for the engine with turbo. The intercooler is behind the front left bumper. On the bumper, just before the intercooler, there is an air intake (one of options bought from the dealer, 11,000 yen) to take cool air into the intercooler. It is necessary to drive on racing track, isn't it?
Sitting on the driver's seat, I close the door. It sounds like sturdy. Starting the engine, shifting to D-range, I start the car. Going on stepping on the gas, then it can make the heavy body with 1,300 kg faster very smoothly. Only 165 ps, despite with a turbo charger, is enough for daily use. It is easy to handle this turbo charger that works from lower speed. The response is as fast as I cannot feel the turbo-lag. On an expressway, even on overtaking or climbing on a steep slope like around Gotenba of Tomei Expressway, I can drive easily, keeping with the fourth speed. The response of steering, having a little too enough play, is sharp on common speed range. The suspension has a certain amount of hardness, like turning clearly and safely such curve of the exit from an expressway as too sharp for RVR running with the same speed. Also it rides well.
The AT "INVECS-II" has been surely improved more than RVR. Very little shock of shifting is with it. About the pattern of shifting, though RVR keeps the third speed on slowing down and then shifts to the first speed just before stopping without the second, Cedia Wagon shifts from the third to the second, and then the first speed so it is easy to drive. Putting the shift knob to Sport Mode, then it can make you drive it like a MT car, and the response of its shifting is so quick. However, it is called "Sport" so I hope it would not shift by itself against my intention. Even in the Sport Mode, it is automatically shifted 4>3>2>1 when the revolution of the engine is getting down. It is sometimes shifted to the first speed at the same time when I shift the knob from the third speed to the second. I hope I could completely fix the gear as I want like NISSAN Fairlady Z.
8-9 km/l in the town and 11-13 km/l on the expressway. 13.3 km/l in max., 9.5km/l in average.
